Abstract

Japan took advantage of Chosun in the mass-production and abuse of opium. During World War I, Japan masterminded the
mass-production of opium and narcotics in Chosun, where there had been no opium-smoking habit among the people,
making Korean Peninsular the supplier of opium. However, Japan sold enormous amount of narcotics in Chosun when
World War I ended earlier than expected. The outbreak of Manchu Incident and Sino-Japanese War made it hard for Japan to import opium, which necessiated Japan to produce opium in Chosun in order to supply it to the colonies and occupied territories.
